Taitung’s “Chen Jianwu Boulevard” Applies for Cultural Landscape Status – Hopes to Preserve Beauty with “Love”

The vast expanse of emerald-green rice paddies surrounding Taitung’s “Chen Jianwu Boulevard” has long been a picturesque sight and a popular tourist destination. Recently, local residents have expressed concern that future buyers of the farmland might construct farmhouses, thereby damaging the original landscape; the Chishang Township Office has urgently applied to preserve the area as a cultural landscape. However, the township office stated,even if the application is approved, it cannot restrict farmers from buying or selling their land—only appeal to “love and persuasion” to keep this pristine land intact..

Located on Chixin No. 3 Road in Chishang Township, the area gained fame due to the popularity of Langyang Boulevard, Heaven’s Road, and the Chen Jianwu Big Tree, attracting numerous visitors. The U-Theatre and Cloud Gate Dance Theatre have also performed in the rice fields. The township office explained that maintaining this beautiful rice field landscape is no easy task, and to prevent human-caused damage, they have designated 175 hectares of farmland as a cultural asset preservation zone.

The township office pointed out that the farmland in this region features a century-old “floating irrigation canal” that draws water from the Sinwulyu Stream to irrigate the rice paddies, forming a natural boundary landscape and contributing to the production of high-quality Chishang rice. In addition to actively seeking cultural asset preservation status for the area, they also hope the public will refrain from building unauthorized farmhouses to avoid spoiling the scenery.
