2014 Fulong Sand Sculpture Festival Debuts Barrier-Free Environment – Visitors Exclaim: “Absolutely Worth It!”

The 2014 Fulong International Sand Sculpture Art Festival held its opening press conference at 10:00 AM on May 3rd at Fulong Beach, symbolizing the official launch of this year’s sand sculpture season. The festival features three main exhibition zones: the Theme Display Area, the International Competition Area, and the Domestic Competition Area, showcasing a total of 71 artworks.

Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, Fan Zhi-gu, stated in his speech that the ministry is committed to integrating aesthetics into tourism infrastructure, serving as a bridge to a better quality of life—and the sand sculpture festival is a prime example. The event also represents a successful case of private-sector-led tourism development, helping to boost visitor numbers. Additionally, the upcoming Salt Sculpture Festival in Tainan draws inspiration from the sand sculpture festival.

Deputy Director of the Tourism Bureau Liu Xilin also noted that the Fulong Sand Sculpture Festival has entered its seventh year. He hopes visitors will openly engage with the masterpieces, the land, and the coastal scenery up close, and envisions the festival creating a win-win-win situation for tourists, tourism operators, and the government.

The “Taiwan World Sand Sculpture Competition,” held in conjunction with the sand sculpture festival, also announced its award winners at the opening ceremony. The top three prizes were awarded to “Vastness,” “The Wisdom of the Lotus,” and “Sharing Stories.”

Although light rain fell intermittently on the opening day, visitors’ enthusiasm remained undampened. Huang Xinyi, a wheelchair guide with the Tourism Bureau, happily pointed out that in the past, soft sand made it difficult for wheelchairs to move around, so visitors could only view the sculptures from afar or rely on beach vehicle shuttles. But this year’s festival debuts a barrier-free pathway, allowing people with disabilities to get up close and appreciate the craftsmanship of the sand sculptors. The accessible path not only benefits those with mobility challenges but is also more family- and elderly-friendly. She hopes the pathway can be widened in the future and include more passing spaces to create an even more visitor-friendly environment.
