YouBike Gains International Acclaim: Taipei Selected as a Global Bicycle City

Taipei City participated in the Global Bicycle Cities Conference for the first time this year and became a member of Cities for Cyclists. The achievements of Taipei’s bicycle infrastructure were highly praised by representatives from various cities and the European Cyclists’ Federation (ECF).

The Taipei City Government stated that the Velo-city Global, the world’s largest cycling conference, selected Taipei as the host city for 2016 last year. This year, Taipei specially organized a delegation to attend Velo-city Global 2014 in Adelaide, Australia. It also joined the Cities for Cyclists (CfC) membership to exchange bicycle promotion policies and experiences with other member cities.

During this year’s CfC meeting, a city representative raised the question of whether subtropical countries are suitable for promoting cycling. ECF Secretary-General Bernhard Ensink noted that Taipei’s bicycle promotion efforts have been quite successful and serve as a model. He was particularly impressed by the results of Taipei’s public bicycle system, YouBike.
