Reopening after nearly half a year: Taitung’s “Water Flowing Uphill” wonder

Taiwan’s famous east coast attraction “Water Flowing Uphill,” which was temporarily closed in February this year to improve surrounding recreational facilities, has finally reopened after being closed for nearly six months. Many tour groups have already started flocking back.

This optical illusion, where water appears to defy gravity and flow slowly uphill along a channel due to the local slope and elevation difference, is considered a “natural wonder.” In 2013 alone, it attracted 1.29 million visitors. However, due to the limited space that couldn’t accommodate the growing number of tourists, the East Coast National Scenic Area Administration decided to carry out public facility improvement works. The entire area was closed for construction starting in February.

The East Coast National Scenic Area Administration stated that the first phase of the project has been completed. Although it hasn’t yet passed final inspection, the construction fences have been removed as safety has been confirmed, and the site has begun reopening to the public. Visitor numbers are gradually returning, while the second phase, including public toilets and an indigenous market, will continue until the end of August.
