“Attack of the Scarecrow” – A massive scarecrow farmer in Yilan’s Sanyi District gears up for the Fragrant Rice Festival

A giant scarecrow has appeared in Yilan’s Sanyi Township? It turns out the Sanyi Township Office got a head start in promoting the Sanyi Fragrant Rice Festival, scheduled for July 19, by creating a towering 6.5-meter-tall scarecrow as the event’s landmark. Its enormous size successfully caught the attention of visitors.

This massive scarecrow farmer is actually a large-scale installation art piece created by the Sanyi Township Office to promote the Fragrant Rice Festival. The frame was constructed by inmates from the Yilan Prison, while the exterior is woven from straw. Dressed in a white undershirt and light blue shorts, and shouldering a giant hoe, it symbolizes the image of men safeguarding their homeland, dedicated to farming and relentless hard work.

The township office hopes to boost the development of Sanyi’s local agricultural industry through creative agricultural art, attracting young people who have left to return home and contribute to the land. The Sanyi Organic Rice Festival features a hundred-meter-long tunnel of bountiful fruits and vegetables. The event also invites teams from the Children’s Folk Games Festival, along with performances of glove puppetry and Taiwanese opera, and offers an organic rice field feast, inviting the public to join in the celebration.
