A creative fusion of cured pork, q grilling, and sushi — breaking traditional taste boundaries

What comes to mind when you think of q grilling? In daily life, we often associate q grilling with risotto or pasta, but who would’ve thought q grilling could be paired with sushi!! This newly opened q Rice in Tainan mainly serves q grilled sushi, and the flavors are all quite unique!!

Let me first introduce the shop’s interior. The decor is not overly fancy — simple and clean, with a capacity of about 30 people.

I ordered the garlic sprout cured pork set meal. Seeing that it was labeled the “No. 1 popular item” on the menu, I had high expectations. There are two upgrade options for the set: one for an additional $35, which includes the main dish plus barley tea, miso soup, and a small bowl; the other for $55 adds a serving of cheese. That day I only went for the $35 upgrade. The miso soup had a well-balanced saltiness, with plenty of tofu and kelp, though the spoon provided was a coffee spoon — a bit too small for soup, making it a little inconvenient to use.

As for the main dish I was most looking forward to, the flavor of the cured pork wasn’t as heavy as expected and paired wonderfully with the q grilled elements. The garlic sprouts weren’t overly spicy either.

For the small bowl, I chose the jade seaweed strips. The selection of small bowls changes daily, based on what the shop offers. Although I didn’t get to try the other varieties, just this one earned a big thumbs up from me. I highly recommend their side dishes!!

The portion might not look like much, but thanks to the addition of q grilled items, one serving is quite filling. The combination of q grilling and sushi is fresh, and the meal itself is pretty good. But whether you’ll come back again really depends on how much you personally enjoy it.
