This fun and creative idea originated in Huwei, Yunlin, known as the “hometown of towels.” Due to changing times and a serious decline in local communities, the more than 200 towel factories that once existed in Yunlin have gradually dwindled, leaving only about 40 to 50 now. To protect the local traditional industry and culture, towel businesses in Yunlin came up with an ingenious idea — using towels to realistically recreate various food items, giving the towel industry a new lease on life and a fresh revival.

The “iicake Yunlin Cake Towel Café” was initiated by Lin Ying-sui, the founder of Taiwan’s cake towel, and her team — Yingchuang Towel Workshop, the original creators of Taiwan’s cake towel. With the theme of “care,” although it’s called a “café,” there’s only a small corner where you can actually taste real food. Almost everything you see in the café is made up of hyper-realistic towel products. These “inedible cakes” are all hand-folded by six staff members in the café, with each person able to make a maximum of only 300 products per day — they are entirely handmade.

In the café, you can see an 8-meter-long, 2-meter-wide, nine-color full-size towel that displays the unique lifestyle and appearance of Yunlin for visitors to observe. Inside, you can also witness the handmade workshop where towel products are made, and in the back area, there is an exhibition and explanation zone showcasing the features and products of the existing towel factories in Yunlin. It features a variety of products launched by different businesses, each part representing a source of local pride in Taiwan.

The existence of the “iicake Yunlin Cake Towel Café” is not just a creative twist on towels — the deeper concept is to instill a heartfelt appreciation for local industry. Reporting from the café just before closing time, it offers everything from surprising and fun items to practical goods. To help people better understand towels, there’s even a handmade towel section called the “Towel Classroom.” Through explanations, everyone can personally fold small Taiwanese-made towels into different shapes and touch the original towels made in Taiwan — it’s truly touching.
