Black sugar ice cream isn’t anything new—but there’s a surprise hiding at the bottom with the cookie base!

We really enjoy visiting Daxi Old Street on weekdays because the area has such rich variety. For example, Heping Road and Zhongshan Road feature well-preserved Japanese colonial-era archway facades, while along the riverside you’ll find Baroque-style Daxi Bridge and Wude Hall, as well as the Chiang Kai-shek Villas that he had built wherever he went. Of course, there are also all kinds of traditional snacks and street food. It really takes half a day to properly explore all these sights.

It takes about 25 minutes to drive down from Daxi Old Tea Factory to Heping Road Old Street. After trying the recently saltier Laobabo tofu, we decided to take a stroll to burn off some calories. Just a few steps in, we were drawn in by the sign for “Pang Coffee.” It’s a takeaway-style shop—though we didn’t see a coffee roaster, they proudly offer their own roasted beans.

The prices are very reasonable: single cups cost 45–70 NT$, and half-pound bags of coffee beans range from 220–320 NT$. Their coffee bean selection is geared toward the general public, featuring beans like Guatemalan, Yirgacheffe, along with the usual suspects like Colombia, Brazil, Mandheling, and Mexico. On the wall hang some framed five-kilo burlap sacks of raw beans.

Next time, I want to try the combo of black sugar ice cream and espresso—a magical double treat!

Okay, I admit it—I came in mainly because it was so hot and I just wanted ice cream. Pang Coffee uses an NISSEI Japanese ice cream machine and makes their own black sugar syrup without any artificial flavoring. That’s why the color isn’t super dark, and the taste is a light, sweet black sugar aroma—refreshing and not overly sweet. Perfect for summer.

Eating it as we walked, we polished off the black sugar ice cream in no time. But the real surprise was at the bottom—there were some cornflakes mixed in. The crispy, salty crunch paired perfectly with the ice cream.
