Shuangxi Park in Taipei City – Free Weekend Experience: Ride a “Giant Water Lily” on the Pond

Want to see the famous “giant water lily,” known for its large leaves that can support a person’s weight? Besides locations in Taoyuan Guanyin or Tainan Baihe, there is now a new option. The Taipei City Government’s Parks Department has cultivated 85 giant water lilies at Shuangxi Park. Now, visitors just need to walk into Shuangxi Park to see the giant lily pads covering the pond’s surface, and by signing up, they can even experience the fun of sitting on a giant water lily.

　The Parks Department stated that the giant water lilies in Shuangxi Park were grown using the bottom silt from the park’s ponds and regenerated soil provided by the Environmental Protection Bureau. Through manual efforts, they overcame the limitations of the hard-bottomed pond to create a suitable growing environment and cultivated them from seed. After long-term effort, each giant water lily now has leaves with a diameter of 155 centimeters, making this park the single location in Taiwan with the largest quantity and most spectacular display of these plants.

To allow the public to experience the fun of riding on a giant water lily, the “2014 Shuangxi Park Aquatic Plant Exhibition” will be held from now until October 12. On the 20th and 21st, there will be one giant water lily riding experience session each at 9:30 AM and 2:30 PM, with 30 spots available per session.
