I’ve witnessed the bustling scene outside “Chang Mei Ice Shop” in the scorching early summer, with crowds lining up eagerly for a taste of ice; I’ve also spent peaceful, cool afternoons inside the shop on ordinary days when torrential plum rain hit southern Taiwan, calmly waiting for the skies to clear. I love both these extreme scenarios. I’m even somewhat enchanted by this refreshing corner in Qishan Town, where the shop has stood for 72 years.

“Chang Mei Ice Shop” was founded by 91-year-old Grandma Chang Mei, who developed “clear ice,” “Italian-style ice cream,” and various types of “zhi zai bing” (traditional popsicles) such as red bean, taro, rice cake, and mung bean in a southern town. Her signature “Chang Mei Signature Ice,” which pairs rich Italian-style ice cream with fluffy-textured banana ice, is served in a glass bowl that presents an elegant fusion of Eastern and Western aesthetics, colorful and beautiful. The food presentation at this old-school ice shop remains refreshingly stylish.
