Is Tainan’s recently viral “largest gashapon machine in Taiwan” facing demolition? The massive gashapon machine located on Weimin Street has drawn crowds even before opening, thanks to its eye-catching design. It officially launched on the 15th, attracting hordes of visitors who queued up to visit, causing major traffic congestion nearby, and was also reported as an unauthorized structure.

The giant gashapon machine, made from a 20-meter container, took over two months and around NT$500,000 to complete, featuring over 9,000 gashapon capsules that are truly a draw. Today (17th), Deputy Secretary-General Wu Xinxiu led an inspection team from the Public Works Bureau to the site. He stated that according to building regulations, the giant gashapon machine and container structure qualify as permanent fixtures and thus require relevant permits. The city’s Public Works Bureau will give the business one month to apply for the necessary licenses.

The largest gashapon machine in Taiwan is not only attention-grabbing—its co-managed container market also brings great commercial opportunities. It had just drawn a round-trip ticket to Japan when the demolition threat emerged. Deputy Secretary-General Wu commented: “Considering that this is a creative idea imported from Japan that also stimulates neighborhood development and turns the area into a new consumption spot for young people, while also having a positive impact on Tainan tourism, we will further communicate with the operator.” Although the stance is generally supportive, he also emphasized strict enforcement regarding the permits. As Monday happens to be the business’s day off, the public may have to wait another month before they can visit the giant gashapon machine again.
