Recently, painted villages have been popping up one after another across Taiwan. Some feature traditional art styles, while others showcase adorable character designs. Some are hand-painted stroke by stroke by village chiefs alongside their sons, while others are created by professional artists. Treasure Hill Artist Village

Located in Taipei’s Gongguan shopping district, Treasure Hill offers a tranquil atmosphere amidst the hustle and bustle. In addition to the Treasure Hill Temple, the area also consists of a historic settlement formed by local residents. Nowadays, with the influx of many artists, Treasure Hill has gradually transformed into an international artist village, often showcasing a variety of artworks. At the entrance parking lot of Treasure Hill, you can also see simple yet charming paintings of animals and figures. Xindian Lixing New Village

Many people may not know that there is also a painted village in Banqiao District, New Taipei City — Lixing New Village. However, compared to other painted villages, the murals here are concentrated only on the walls of a few old houses. Lixing New Village is located within Banqiao’s Fuzhou Civic Park, and the paintings were done by students from Taiwan University of Arts.

Taoyuan Kengkou Painted Village

Covering an area of about 1,500 pyeong, the painted content includes themes such as flowers, birds, landscapes, and cartoon characters, all exuding a local, down-to-earth charm. Many works also incorporate clever designs that allow visitors to interact with the art, adding an element of fun. In the most famous mural of oxen plowing the field, visitors can not only pull the ox themselves but also see the painted oxes’ eyes following them — incredibly lifelike. Taichung Rainbow Village

Created by a retired veteran, Rainbow Village came to life in August 2008 when Huang Yung-Fu picked up a paintbrush and began using vibrant colors to draw figures, animals, and various images along a 50-meter-long alleyway. The result looked as if a rainbow had been painted on the walls. This colorful transformation helped save the village from demolition, and it was eventually incorporated into a park to preserve this rare gem. Taichung Zhongming 13th Neighborhood Painted Community

Painted by several different artists, the Zhongming 13th Neighborhood community in Taichung features dinosaurs, dream beasts, and local Taiwanese snacks. It reflects the artists’ desire to protect children and the city. The entire area can be explored on foot in just 10 minutes, yet each artwork conveys the creators’ unique interactions and ideas. After walking through the whole area, standing in the open space on the other side of the community, you’ll see a fascinating contrast between high-rises and low houses — a special vibrancy expressed through artistic creation. Changhua Dairy Cow Painted Village

Known as “Fubao Village,” this place features hundreds of cows painted on its walls, all created by Village Chief Huang Yaohui and his son Huang Zongming. As Fubao Village is home to Taiwan’s largest dairy farming area, it is also known as the “Hometown of Dairy Cows.” With white walls as the canvas, the village showcases a total of 500 dairy cows in various poses and expressions, rendered in different painting styles — truly amusing. Yunlin Beigang Nail Art Village

The Yunlin Beigang "Nail Art Village" was created by local elderly women who personally collected colorful old aluminum cans and meticulously nailed them onto walls. This eco-friendly and creative project has also reinvigorated the aging community. The largest nail art piece in the village measures 5.2 meters in length, 2.6 meters in height, and uses over 4,000 aluminum cans to depict the agricultural lifestyle centered around the area's main produce—potatoes. Yunlin Cat Mural Village

A must-visit pilgrimage site for cat lovers！Students from Huwei University of Science and Technology in Yunlin, inspired by the local government’s picture book "The Cat on the Roof," transformed the entire community into a three-dimensional storybook. The narrative follows the life of the main character "Mimi" and the local residents, with the image of Mimi—who died in a car accident—preserved in the village. Yunlin Huwei Paper-Cut Art Village

In May 2012, resident artist Zheng Yuandong from Huwei University of Science and Technology sought to bring art beyond campus and into more flexible forms of cultural heritage. With the approval of the then Huwei Township Mayor and the head of Beixi Village, he led 40 students to create artworks in the small village. In recent years, the "Paper-Cut Mural Village" has gained significant recognition, with bright red paper-cut designs painted on the village walls and extending along utility poles. Along the roughly 500-meter road, traditional red paper-cut motifs represent the community’s identity, featuring themes such as Taiwanese temples, images, and traditional figures. Yunlin Taisi Haikou Mural Village

A mural village with an international art style, known as the "International Mural Village." Since 2007, the Taisi Arts Association and the Vision Youth Action Network have organized international volunteer camps every winter and summer. Youth from various countries come to Taiwan for cultural exchange and to experience life in the fishing village, while also helping clean the environment and beautify the community. This coastal village, known for its oyster production, features oyster shells as a common sight. Centered around the lives of fishermen, the village walls are adorned with a variety of surprising stories and artistic expressions, including collages and spray paintings.

Yunlin Huwei Kuto Old Rural Mural Art

Kuto Village is a typical farming community, primarily cultivating peanuts, garlic, rice, and corn. During the redevelopment of the old community, students from Huwei University of Science and Technology’s Multimedia Department were invited to paint murals that incorporate rural scenery and local specialties. The murals are divided into six themed areas. In addition to depicting scenes of water buffalo and egrets in the rice fields, some interactive elements allow visitors to experience plowing fields just before the farmer arrives. Chiayi Xingang Ban Tou Village Koji and Cut-and-Mount Art Village

Chiayi’s Xingang Ban Tou Village is a hub for preserving Taiwan’s temple Koji pottery and cut-and-mount art. It is famous for decorating various corners of the village with Koji ceramics and mosaic collages. Villagers use mosaics and Koji to create murals on their walls, depicting rural stories, mosaic patterns, or playful scenes of children. Tainan City Rainbow Alley

Tainan’s Rainbow Village is located in Fuxing Li, Yongkang District, which also has the highest concentration of veterans in Tainan, with an average age of over 80. The community consists mostly of narrow alleys, including one called "Touch the Breast Alley," which is so narrow that only one person can walk through at a time. The head of the local health station, Li Zhen-Guo (the village chief), and 90-year-old Uncle Gu, along with 40 elderly people aged 70–90, painted the once-uneven walls and low housing exteriors along the left side of the entrance to the Tainan Branch of Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital, transforming them into beautiful patterns stroke by stroke.

Tainan Houpi Tugou Rural Art Museum

Tainan’s Houpi District is home to Taiwan’s champion rice. Later, through the joint efforts of students and faculty from Tainan National University of the Arts and local residents, it took ten years to transform the village into Taiwan’s first rural art museum under the concept that "the village is the art museum, and the art museum is the village." The fields feature many old photos, and the walls are painted with scenes of rural life—not only telling the hardships of farmers but also sharing the stories of Tugou.

Tainan – Shanhua Hujia Li Mural Village

The Hujia Li Mural Village in Tainan’s Shanhua District was created voluntarily by seven to eight adults and children. What started as a spontaneous project quickly won praise from nearby neighbors. In addition to adorable Taiwanese black bears, Totoros, and Malaysian-style motifs, the village now also features Q-version Avengers, Luffy, and various cute anime characters. Newly painted Jin Tongchun Irrigation Canal Village in Yilan

Near the well-known Jinmei Kiln bricks, residents began painting together here in 2012, transforming the community into a colorful little village set against red bricks and tiles. With landscape murals, short walls painted in various brick colors, playful sea creatures, and the ever-popular SpongeBob and his buddy Patrick Star, visiting this place will spark your creativity and inner childlike wonder.

Beishiliyan (Baishoulian) Tribe, Taitung

This once-obscure little village gained fame thanks to the arrival of a giant fluffy rabbit and the emergence of characters from Jimmy Liao’s picture books. Here, you can follow a little girl through the village alleys, stand like the leading sheep on the embankment gazing at the Pacific Ocean, or feel the powerful beats of the Amis people’s Pao Bao drums inside the houses. Dawu Painted Village, Taitung

Thanks to sponsorship from a paint company, the old streets have gotten a new look, bringing vitality back to the community. Residents and volunteers painted together along Dawu Old Street, mainly adding vibrant colors to the walls of homes, as well as shelters and footbridges. Different from other painted villages, cartoons are rare here; instead, geometric patterns create a feeling that the community is shining, as if stepping into a fairy tale. Xifang Painted Village, Lesser Kinmen

What would Minnan-style architecture look like when painted? The Xifang Community on Lesser Kinmen in Lieyu stands out prominently amid its red brick and earthen walls. The bold paintings on the walls of these old houses carry a bit of a “rebellious” flair. In fact, these were the result of a community-building initiative by the Kinmen County Cultural Affairs Bureau, and many of the paintings were created through “parent-child painting” activities. With community beautification as the theme, the walls of abandoned old houses have been turned into storybooks for kids and their parents. There are also several artworks by university students, welcoming visitors in these quaint low-rise houses.

Xu Family Painted Village, Penghu

Compared to other painted villages, Xu Family Painted Village in Penghu is more realistic. This is the old traditional house used as the setting for the movie “Osmanthus Alley.” Instead of cartoon characters, what’s painted here are Penghu’s local scenic spots — Double-Heart Fish Traps, basalt columns, the cross-sea bridge, lighthouses, and even the yellow cows by the roadside. After seeing the beautiful sights of Penghu, doesn’t a visit to Xu Family Painted Village feel especially memorable?
