Tongji Anping Bean Curd, which opened in 1970 and is located on Beian Road, is one of the must-try bean curds for many visitors to Anping. Although the shop also has a branch in Kaohsiung, eating at the original location is a different experience. After driving from Kaohsiung early in the morning and visiting some attractions in Anping, we stopped by for a refreshing bowl of bean curd before lunch.

We had thought that tourists wouldn’t start arriving in Anping until the afternoon, but were surprised to find the old street bustling with people even in the morning. There was even a queue outside the bean curd shop, with separate lines for dine-in and takeout. Most visitors opted for dine-in, and luckily, the staff worked quickly, so the line moved fast and we didn’t have to wait too long.

Besides bean curd, there are also ice desserts to choose from.

There are many bean curd flavors, mainly divided into white bean curd and black bean curd, each with five flavor options to pick from. The staff made a small mistake – we had ordered lemon flavor, but somehow ended up with the original flavor.

My husband queued up to order while I found us a seat. The shop has the width of two storefronts and offers plenty of seating. The turnover rate is fast, so finding a table wasn’t a problem.

Original traditional white bean curd – NT$30
The shop uses non-GMO soybeans with no artificial additives. As soon as you take a bite, you can taste the rich aroma of soybeans – a flavor unique to traditional, old-school bean curd. It comes simply with sugar syrup, giving it a nostalgic taste.

The texture of the bean curd is firm and doesn’t completely fall apart when stirred. Each bite brings a smooth, bean-flavored goodness – truly delicious.

Tapioca ball ice – NT$30
Half tapioca balls and half crushed ice, sweetened only with syrup. On a hot day, this dish is both cooling and comforting.

The small tapioca pearls are the kind we used to eat as kids. Compared to the larger boba pearls, these smaller, more delicate ones are more appealing. They have a chewy texture that rivals the big boba, and paired with cool crushed ice and syrup, they bring back childhood memories – highly recommended.

Matcha red bean ice – NT$55
The matcha flavor is rich, though a bit overpowering. The red beans are plump and distinct – likely sourced from Wandan, known for their quality beans. Personally, I felt the snowflake ice was a bit too sweet and could get tiring after a while. I’d suggest sharing it among several people so you can try a variety of items.

I really love Tongji’s traditional white bean curd – it takes us back to the simple, genuine flavors of our childhood. Even now, we still adore this classic-style bean curd. Compared to today’s flashy desserts, the natural and simple taste is what makes it most appealing. There’s also a branch in Kaohsiung on Yihua Road – we’ll definitely go back next time. This delicious, traditional-style bean curd and tapioca ball ice come highly recommended.
