The natural scenery of Japan’s Tohoku region has gradually become a focal point for travelers, and among them, Sakata City in Yamagata Prefecture is a place where mountains and the sea are close at hand. Its rich natural landscapes and simple, unspoiled atmosphere make every step feel lighter. To take in the full beauty of Sakata’s mountains and sea, you absolutely must head up into the hills. At Forest Overlooking the Sea on the hillside, you can gaze at the vast sea, the lush greenery, and the peaceful harmony of mountains and ocean, and also enjoy the refreshing sea breeze from the nearby coast, making your trip both relaxing and enriching.

Forest Overlooking the Sea is located in the suburbs of Sakata City, on a small hill. Though not high in elevation, it offers excellent views and, due to its closeness to the forests, is even nicknamed “The Forest of Yamagata Prefecture’s People.” At Forest Overlooking the Sea, the suspension bridge is a particularly popular spot. Walking across it feels like stepping into a tranquil painting, where you can enjoy the rich greenery and the peaceful rural scenery. On sunny days, the golden rice fields spread out beautifully beneath your feet, creating a view too lovely to miss.

Walking along the path to the suspension bridge, this area offers a variety of different natural scenes. In this section, you can admire the soaring treetops and feel the serene atmosphere of the forest. The environment here allows visitors to connect deeply with nature. Since the area is also used for farming, education, and environmental learning, you can see many farm facilities here as well. In addition, the open-air stage here sometimes hosts performances by local farmers’ bands, and there are also areas where you can enjoy the sweet songs of wild birds. It’s truly a delightful place.

About a 10-minute drive down the hill from Forest Overlooking the Sea, there’s another interesting spot. Along the approach path outside the scenic garden Sōkōji Temple, two rows of cedar trees that look like mushrooms but have oddly unique shapes make people stop and take a closer look. According to the guide, these cedar trees are over 300 years old, and once their shapes are designated, they can never be altered, so they are regularly pruned to maintain their form — which is quite special.
