Sun, sand, and bikinis — island getaways are always relaxing. But you might not imagine that traveling to Sint Maarten in the Caribbean means your ears aren't greeted by birdsong, but the deafening roar of massive Boeing 747s.

Princess Juliana International Airport is located extremely close to nearby hotels and beaches. Guests at nearby hotels often complain about the overwhelming noise from airplanes, but due to the airport’s uniquely challenging location, it has unexpectedly become a pilgrimage site for aviation enthusiasts.

All flights to St. Martin must make low-altitude approaches over one of the world’s shortest runways. Beachgoers from around the globe gather here, cameras in hand, to witness this spectacular sight.

Nowadays, sun and sand are no longer the main draws of St. Martin. When you visit, be sure to wait on the beach and experience flying as close as possible to an aircraft mid-flight.
