Indoor picnic time! A popular brunch spot in Kaohsiung: Hearty hot sandwiches

Meiji’s good friend, Shaoxing Mama, happened to have some free time for a little vacation, so she asked Meiji where she’d like to go. Meiji said she wanted to check out Dadong Wetlands Park because she had heard from her neighbor that it was really beautiful. Even though the weather was scorching hot, Meiji still wanted to see it. So they arranged to meet at Dadong Metro Station, and Shaoxing Mama picked Meiji up by car. Since it was very hot around noon, they decided to grab a brunch nearby first and visit the wetlands park later.

It wasn’t easy to find a place that offers both food and picnic options—we drove around the alley twice before finding it. Fortunately, there’s a convenient parking lot right in front of the restaurant. If you turn into the alley, the most noticeable landmark is the post office. The parking lot is right across from it, and you can see a distinct white building once you look inside from the parking area.

As soon as Meiji walked in, she was drawn to this collection of quirky dolls—one lion riding on a tiger and a dog. What a strange combo!

The ceiling of the shop is decorated with cute ornaments. Surprisingly, it was nearly full even on a Monday lunchtime.

After checking the menu, Meiji realized why the restaurant has such a unique name—it’s actually a merger of two concepts: "有料理" (which means “with cuisine”) and "有野餐" (which means “with picnic”). Meiji tried the trial menu today, which might still be adjusted in the future. The first part of the menu features brunch options.

The latter part is for set meals.

The last page lists the drinks.

Shaoxing Mama orderedthe Light Salad Brunch ($200),with the main dish being Picnic Chicken, served with a thick slice of buttered toast and yogurt. Although no drink was included, drinks purchased separately come with a 50% discount. The salad comes with sesame dressing—tasty—and the greens were fresh. The chicken on top was tender.

The side yogurt was topped with honey and granola, giving it the feel of homemade yogurt—it was quite nice. Meiji didn’t try the toast since she had eaten breakfast late and was already quite full after just a little.

Meiji orderedthe Hot Sandwich Brunch series ($240),choosing the Korean-style Kimchi Pork & Cheese option. For sides, she could pick her own, so she went with scrambled eggs, bacon potatoes, the daily soup, and black tea with milk. The main plate came with a panini, a side salad, and bacon potatoes. One small complaint was the bacon potatoes—they had a bit of a fried oil smell. The scrambled eggs had spices added and were quite tender.

The Korean Kimchi Pork & Cheese panini didn’t have a huge amount of filling, but the strong kimchi flavor made it quite satisfying.

The unsweetened black tea with milk tasted better than Meiji expected—smooth and pleasant.
