Free VR underwater archaeology experience at the Sanxianhu Museum – uncover the secrets of Penghu’s “Titanic”!

The Sanxianhu Museum previously launched a “Sleepover at the Museum” event, allowing the public to explore the museum after dark. The initiative was an instant hit, combining education with fun while satisfying visitors’ wildest imaginations. On September 1st, the museum will introduce the “Explore the Prince Ship” VR experience, letting participants dive into underwater archaeology themselves.

In the past, the Sanxianhu Museum also offered virtual reality (VR) underwater archaeology experiences, attracting over 300,000 visitors and turning its 14-meter-long 3D underwater tunnel into a popular photo spot. This year, it will take everyone deeper into the sea to uncover the secrets of the sunken “Prince Ship.” Each experience session lasts 12 minutes, with four spots available per session.

The “Prince Ship” was a British cargo vessel, the Borah, known for carrying a large amount of gold and silver treasure. In 1892, on its way back to the UK from Shanghai, it struck a reef near Gupoyu in Penghu during a typhoon. This century-old shipwreck was listed and monitored in 2015 as an important underwater cultural asset in Taiwan. This VR experience lets visitors dive beneath the waves to explore the captain’s quarters, first-class cabins, and more, while interacting with lifelike schools of fish—bringing the thrill of underwater archaeology to life. Entry is available with a ticket or free admission proof, and registration is on-site until capacity is reached.
