Working on a plane, flight attendants are like ferry operators — guiding passengers through a crossroads to their destination. It’s not easy to delicately meet passengers’ needs in the high-pressure environment of a long-haul, enclosed space. According to the netizen, during the flight from Taipei Songshan Airport to Shanghai Hongqiao Airport, there was a middle-aged man seated in 9J who had limited mobility and could not feed himself. The cabin manager personally went to his seat and fed him bite by bite. The netizen wrote: “I remember vividly that the meal included two slices of apple and one slice of watermelon. The purser carefully cut the fruit into appropriate sizes with a knife before feeding them to the gentleman in seat 9J.”
The netizen stated that because they didn’t know how to express their gratitude to the purser (cabin manager), they took a photo and posted it online, hoping to fly with him again in the future. In response to the widely circulated act of kindness, Purser Jiang Jiayang, who has been serving with China Airlines for 33 years, said he simply believed he was doing what he ought to do. “Every flight attendant would provide similar service.” China Airlines also responded that while there are internal guidelines for special care of passengers with specific needs, most such services by flight attendants are voluntary. Jiang Jiayang’s thoughtful and attentive attitude deserves recognition, and he will be awarded an administrative commendation.
