Some well-known attractions or temples in Japan (such as Kiyomizu-dera), although typically only open to visitors until 5 or 6 pm, often extend their hours for nighttime access during special seasons—especially during cherry blossom or maple leaf viewing periods. With cherry blossom season currently in full swing, many attractions have launched night cherry blossom events. 1. Aomori – Hirosaki Park
Listed among the top three cherry blossom viewing destinations, Hirosaki Park by day presents a dreamy yet historic scene with pink cherry blossoms interwoven with Hirosaki Castle. But the nighttime cherry blossom event is also an unmissable attraction. The overwhelming pink blooms layer across the branches, taking on a different romantic charm under the warm glow of lantern light. The ubiquitous canopy of cherry blossoms above makes it easy to lose yourself in the moment.

This year’s cherry blossom season at Hirosaki Park runs from April 23 to May 6, with nighttime illuminations from sunset until 10 pm.

2. Tokyo – Ueno Onshi Park
Since the Edo period, Ueno Park has been a famous spot for cherry blossom viewing. When night falls, over 800 traditional Japanese lanterns line both sides of the cherry blossom avenues, casting a purplish-pink hue across the park. Ueno Park’s Shinobazu Pond is also a must-visit cherry blossom spot within the grounds.

Nighttime illuminations at Ueno Park start at 5:30 pm and end at 8 pm. In addition to the cherry blossom light-up, the park also hosts events such as antique markets.

3. Niigata Prefecture – Takeda Park
Takeda Park, home to Takeda Castle, holds the “Million People Cherry Blossom Viewing Festival” around early April each year. At night, 3,000 Japanese-style lanterns brighten the entire park as if it were daytime. Pink cherry blossoms, night lights, and the gently flowing river nearby create a stunningly dreamy scene that draws large crowds of cherry blossom enthusiasts every year.

In addition to the night cherry blossom illuminations, around 300 shops and food stalls gather in the park, turning it into a limited-time “Cherry Blossom Night Market,” adding another lively dimension to the cherry blossom festivities.
