Seven young men who returned home to fulfill their dreams transformed a 107-year-old building into “Futian French Pastry,” sparking a dessert craze in Chiayi. Their cozy yet refined shop has garnered much love. Two years after opening, they’ve continued pursuing their dream by opening another shop in downtown Chiayi that uses local Taiwanese ingredients to make ice cream cake rolls, complete with delivery services. The textures are delicate and fulfilling — well worth a taste.

▲ The interior of “Fortune Fresh Futian Ice Cream Cake Rolls” is quite spacious.

“Fortune Fresh Futian Ice Cream Cake Rolls,” which focuses on ice cream and cake rolls, is the second venture from the Futian series. Unlike the first shop, which features the traditional curves and folds of an old house renovation, this dedicated cake roll store offers a fresh and spacious feel. It targets the afternoon tea dessert market, and the shop also features a transparent kitchen where customers can watch the dessert-making process.

Unlike other dessert shops that offer a dazzling array of cakes, this place sells only two types: ice cream and cake rolls. Be sure to try their signature “Ultra-Rich Taro Roll.” Many may have tried the taro rolls from the famous Shuang Shuai Cake Shop, known for their dense and hearty texture. Store owner Feng Junhao says Futian’s cake rolls use Jiaxian taro. Though also filled with taro paste, what sets theirs apart is the large amount of taro mixed into the sponge, giving the filling a strong milky aroma — offering a taste experience similar to taro-flavored whipped cream.

▲ The Hazelnut Chocolate Roll uses Belgian chocolate. Though not the most photogenic, it’s surprisingly delicious.

Additionally, the hazelnut chocolate roll at the shop uses Belgian chocolate, with hazelnuts mixed into the filling. Paired with a fluffy cake sponge and rich chocolate flavor, it’s truly a treat. The shop’s homemade ice cream has a smooth texture, free from overly processed dairy flavors. Paired with various juices made from local Taiwanese fruits and cake rolls, it embodies heartfelt Taiwanese flavors while also showcasing the creativity of young people — making it a dessert shop in Chiayi well worth checking out.
