Many cafés rich in artistic ambiance not only cater to basic dining needs but also frequently host lectures, showcases, unplugged or live music performances. Taichung’s “Hooloo Café,” started by musicians, embodies all these elements and even features a homestay on its upper floor, offering travelers a comfortable space to enjoy music, coffee, and a moment of rest.

The Rock Room features a design with two beds.

Hooloo Café often hosts performances by talented musicians such as Jill Hsu, Cheer Chen, Xiao Hosho, and various bands, along with documentary screenings. Details about related events can be found on their website.

Established in August 2009, Hooloo Café is a “dream café” co-created by accordionist Wang Yanmeng and Mi Mi Jiang (Ah Mi), lead singer of the band Open Eye. The café’s name “forro” means “for all,” expressing a wish to create a friendly and warm environment.

The musician-founded Hooloo Café offers a simple and clean atmosphere.

Transformed from an old house, Hooloo Café was mainly renovated by Taichung-based Have Fun Design Company, following the principle of “showcasing the past.” Upon entering the café, visitors can see a suspended, cut-off staircase overhead, while the most eye-catching feature—a dead tree branch hanging upside down from the ceiling—was originally a crepe myrtle that withered during transplantation.

Hooloo has plants such as osmanthus, michelia, loquat, and golden rain trees. The failed transplant of a crepe myrtle was left as part of the decor.

The first-floor interior is mostly inspired by Ah Mi’s ideas, featuring many of her and Wang Yanmeng’s collections, including an accordion. Hooloo’s second floor is dedicated to the homestay and includes four room types: the Rock Room, Single Room, Princess Room, and Lohas Room. The Princess Room creates a dreamy style using a pink color scheme, while the Lohas Room offers access to the second-floor balcony. Guests can enjoy a free drink and a light snack downstairs, but due to limited room availability, priority may be given to musicians during performances. It’s recommended to book at least two weeks in advance.

The large single bed in the Princess Room also comes with a massage machine to pamper the “princess’s” feet.
