The thriving eco-industry in Taomi Eco-village has significantly increased tourist traffic to the community in recent years. The newly upgraded Taomi Pit Stream Trail, which connects the parking lot with the community, offers a safer and more accessible path for visitors. With the support of the Sun Moon Lake National Scenic Area Administration, this historic path — which witnessed the resilient efforts of Taomi residents in building an eco-village after the 921 earthquake — has been transformed from a rugged gravel and dirt trail into a solid, secure, and ecologically preserved pathway. It has now been beautifully redesigned and renamed the “Taomi Pit Stream – Butterfly Trail.”

Taomi Pit Stream nurtures the rich ecological environment of the Taomi community. After the 921 earthquake, in an effort to develop the Taomi Eco-village, local residents initiated a stream conservation project and voluntarily greened over 300 meters of riverside pathway from the parking area to the village. This riverside trail not only symbolizes the collective memory of the community’s dedication to eco-development, but also serves as an ideal spot for visitors to stroll and enjoy the scenic river views. To improve the original gravel surface and enhance safety, the Sun Moon Lake Scenic Area Administration — after expanding its jurisdiction to include Taomi — invested funds for the first time to significantly upgrade the trail’s safety and ecological features. A variety of butterfly-attracting plants such as spring lettuce, wild peony, and mountain osmanthus were planted along the path to create a suitable habitat. Zhang, director of the Sun Moon Lake Scenic Area Administration, stated: “We aim not only to preserve the memories and emotional connection that local residents have with this trail, but also hope to eventually expand this riverside pathway into a community-based butterfly-watching route, providing a new starting point for Taomi’s green, slow-travel experiences.”

This riverside pathway will be maintained by the New Home Paper Dome Learning Park, which will continue planting abundant nectar and host plants to foster a “butterfly at every step” ecological trail. Liao Jiazhan, chairman of the New Home Paper Dome Learning Park, said: “In the future, we also plan to gradually transform this riverside trail into a cultural and creative art gallery, integrating fun handmade markets and locally distinctive goods. This green corridor will be turned into a unique space for slow, mindful living. Visitors can walk along the riverside, visit the community for learning experiences, appreciate the beauty of rich ecology, and immerse themselves in local culture. By focusing on ecology as the foundation, industry as the application, and culture as the essence, we aim to build new opportunities for green industrial development.”
