This secluded tea garden retreat not only offers a tranquil environment but also boasts a dreamy sea of clouds. Its million-dollar sunrises and stunning iridescent light displays are must-shoot scenes for photography enthusiasts. Located on Pinglin Mountain, Nanshan Temple, also known as the Immortal’s Temple, was built in 1902 by scholars from Zhangzhou, Fujian, who gathered locals to construct it together. Blessed with natural feng shui that deflects negative energy, it offers sweeping views of Dashihu Lake and the terraced fields.

Situated halfway up the Beiyi Highway, Nanshan Temple features tea gardens nearby and a scenic viewing platform at the back — both popular spots for sightseeing. In winter, the sea of clouds often appears here, making it one of Pinglin’s iconic landmarks.

Nanshan Temple has a history of over a hundred years. The temple grounds include a Toad Pond, whose crystal-clear, cool waters are refreshing. A large rock in the pond is called the Toad Stone, and beneath it lies a cave that emits eerie creaking sounds whenever wind or rain blows through — a truly mystical phenomenon.

Photography enthusiasts are advised to arrive early in the morning to capture the spectacular sea of clouds. On clear nights, you can also shoot stunning photos with starry skies and car light trails.
