Having left Taiwan for the U.S. many years ago, Xu Yuhua wandered through dreams, capturing memories of her joyful childhood in Taiwan and a tribute to life. No matter where you come from, as long as you sit around the large round “banquet table,” we’re all family. Surrounded by familiar childhood fairy tale characters and Taiwanese foods that those abroad miss most, we’re reminded to cherish fleeting beautiful moments and to more deeply appreciate the simplicity, joy, and local culture that has grown with us.

Taiwan-born Martin Hsu (Xu Yuhua) now lives in San Francisco. For the past 10 years, he has devoted himself wholeheartedly to creating art with a distinctly personal style, making him one of the most active Asian artists on the U.S. West Coast. After earning an animation degree from CSUF in the U.S., he began working on character design for Disney Channel and Nickelodeon. In recent years, Martin has participated in exhibitions hosted by major American media, including Sanrio, Warner Brothers, and Disney.

In the In Dreams “Wandering in Dreams” series, Little Red Riding Hood heads to her grandmother’s house with her wolf friend to deliver a fragrant box lunch of braised pork rice. Meanwhile, little Alice gets distracted on her way to school, follows a motorcycle-riding rabbit, and picks up a giant bubble tea with toppings from the Mad Hatter. Around the corner, she meets the temperamental Queen of Hearts, and everyone sits down together to eat a bowl of warm, hearty vermicelli. In the end, they all drift off into a deep sleep.

Walking along a winding path, immerse yourself in the nostalgic scenes of the peony garden, surrounded by familiar characters and delicious food from childhood. Relive those bedtime fairy tales you never tired of hearing as a child. It reminds us to treasure every beautiful moment and to once again fully embrace and enjoy the simple, unpretentious local culture and pure joy that grew with us.
