Not only in summer can you see fireflies—coming to Alishan in winter also lets you admire the beautiful flight of these night sprites. The Satoyama area, with an altitude of up to 2,600 meters, boasts rich natural resources and diverse terrain, providing the most suitable environment for firefly growth, allowing Alishan to offer a dreamy fluorescent spectacle all year round.

Currently, there are9species of autumn and winter fireflies recorded in Taiwan,8of which are distributed in mountainous areas in the Alishan region. The main species for viewing include the Window Firefly, Sawtooth Snow Firefly, and Sacred Tree Firefly. Unlike spring and summer fireflies that flicker through the night, autumn and winter fireflies emit a continuous glow. When night falls, they slowly emerge from the grass, trailing light trails like meteors. Surrounded by silence, it feels as if time stands still, leaving onlookers breathless and awestruck, adding a touch of magic to Alishan’s nights.

Areas such as the Shanlin Trail along Fenchihu, Dingshihzuo Trail, Dinghu Community, Guanghua Community, Yuantan Nature Ecological Park, and Lijia Maple Viewing Trail have the highest firefly populations. The best viewing time is between 5:30 PM and 7:30 PM, with the peak activity lasting about an hour, so plan your visit early.
