A rope protector—many people might not know what it is because it goes by different names, has various shapes, and serves slightly different purposes. So whether you understand it or not, know about it or not, I’ll just call it a rope protector.
A rope protector is a protective pad we use in cave exploration to prevent rope abrasion, hence the short name "rope protector." Nowadays, there are all kinds of rope protectors on the market, ranging from tens to thousands of yuan. Below, I’ll just list a few at random (due to lack of thorough organization, the images and materials are a bit blurry, but you’ll get the general idea):

1.PETZL C45 - PROTEC Rope Protector
Durable PVC sheath, lightweight and flexible.
* Uses Velcro for opening/closing, and rope buckles for installation or removal.

2. This is the ROCK rope protector that I use, and it works the same way as the PETZL one mentioned above.

3. These are the PETZL P68 and P49 protectors. They’re quite expensive. Actually, you can DIY these too, but it requires a lathe and large equipment. It’s doable, but not very practical.

There are also various other brands of rope protectors out there—won’t go through them all one by one. Next, let me talk about a DIY rope protector I saw recently. It’s convenient to use, lightweight, and inexpensive...

This one—you can probably tell what it is just by looking. It’s a long piece of shaggy carpet and two strips of Velcro. I’ve tried it myself, and the stickiness of the Velcro is quite strong. You can even connect two rope protectors together using the Velcro. This DIY version does a good job preventing rope wear, and since it’s inexpensive, you won’t feel bad about throwing it away after a few uses. I believe if you take good care of it, it won’t break easily either.

It’s sufficient for indoor rope use, and also works for outdoor climbing, single-rope technique, rescue operations, outdoor sports competitions, cave exploration... It’s small in size, light in weight, anyone can make it, and it’s a great, easily accessible tool for practicing single-rope techniques.
