Explore Liugui's Forest Hot Springs—A Super Fun One-Day Town Stroll!

Liugui is located in the northeast of Kaohsiung, at the junction of the Pingtung Plain and the Central Mountain Range. The area has many hills and is traversed by the Qiaonong River, featuring rich valley terrain and hot spring resources. Take a weekend holiday and bring your family for a visit to Liugui!

Spanning areas such as Taoyuan, Liugui, and Maolin, Maolin National Scenic Area encompasses high mountains, deep valleys, meandering rivers, waterfalls, canyons, and hot springs that reach deep into the Central Mountain Range. It is also the traditional habitat of indigenous tribes such as the Bunun and Rukai, boasting abundant natural resources and a world-class overwintering purple butterfly valley. The tribal villages also feature slate houses, suspension bridges, cultural festivals, and unique local cuisine, attracting visitors for exploration and nature walks.

The unique terrain of Shiba Luohan Mountain creates scenery reminiscent of Guilin’s landscape, earning it the nickname “Little Guilin.” The Huoyanshan area is made up of more than 40 bare mountains, and due to its distinctive connected peaks, they stand like eighteen arhats by the roadside, presenting a spectacular view. Hence, the Shiba Luohan Mountain Scenic Area, located within the valleys of Hongshui Creek and Zhujiao Creek, boasts dense forests and clear streams, making it one of the main spots for butterfly watching, as many species inhabit and breed here.

Xinwei Forest Park covers an area of about 30 hectares and was once one of the largest nurseries in Taiwan. Within the park lies a roughly 2-kilometer-long mahogany boulevard. Around the Qingming Festival each year, the green leaves of the mahogany trees along the path turn yellowish-red, coupled with fallen leaves on the trail, creating a tree-sea tunnel effect—perfect for leisurely walks and photos.

The majestic Liugui Giant Buddha is situated in the Xin Kai Tribe of Liugui District. The Buddha statue stands 24 meters tall and weighs 167 metric tons. In front flows the beautiful Qiaonong River, winding gracefully, while behind it rises the continuous and majestic Central Mountain Range. The natural beauty further highlights the compassionate and solemn expression of the Buddha. At the entrance of the Buddha-worshipping avenue, there is a life-sized Buddha hand for devotees to approach and take photos. Visitors can explore the story of the Buddha’s enlightenment and learn about the eight stages of his path to Buddhahood.
