After the Lunar New Year comes Western Valentine’s Day, when couples around the world pour out into the streets, publicly flaunting their sweet romance and blinding passersby with their affection. And if you’re single and don’t want to witness these painful sights, steer clear of the following seven “love flash zones.” Take care of yourself and treat yourself well instead.

1.Movie Theaters

Movie theaters are always a top choice for Valentine’s Day dates. If you head to the cinema that day only to end up sitting next to a lovey-dovey couple, it could really ruin your movie experience. So, we suggest singles avoid cinemas on Valentine’s Day. Instead, rent a DVD after work, snuggle up on the sofa at home with some snacks, or invite a few fellow single friends over for a fun hangout—that’s not a bad idea either.

2.Shopping Malls & Urban Hotspots

Busy areas like Taipei’s Xinyi District, East District, and Ximending, or Taichung’s Qianmei Greenway and Yizhong Street—popular spots packed with restaurants and great for shopping and dating—are guaranteed to be swarming with couples on Valentine’s Day. Stay alert.

3.Riverside Parks

Although riverside parks are great places for solo people-watching or relaxing, on Valentine’s Day they turn into romantic paradises for couples. For example, Kaohsiung’s Love River holds Valentine’s events every year, filling the area with an overwhelming lovey-dovey atmosphere. It’s best for singles to steer clear.

4.Urban Parks

Parks at night on Valentine’s Day are also major gathering spots for couples. For instance, Taipei’s Da’an Forest Park is full of couples holding hands while walking or sitting on benches, sharing sweet nothings—so much PDA, it’s almost blinding. Even after dinner time, many long-term couples enjoy strolling together in the park, which can be quite the envy-inducing sight.
