Every year during Lantern Festival, the orthodox Luermen Tienhou Temple in Annan District, Tainan, holds its annual “Welcoming the Spring Ox” fireworks celebration series, especially the highly anticipated nighttime fireworks show that lights up the sky from 9:30 PM to 11:00 PM, attracting large crowds each year to experience the vibrant festive atmosphere.

On February 8th for Lantern Festival, the “Welcoming the Spring Ox Parade & International High-Altitude Fireworks Show” will feature music-accompanied fireworks displays on both sides of the temple rooftop bridge, paired with the famous Tainan tradition of “beehive firecrackers.” The Spring Ox racing event is scheduled for 7:50 PM, while the high-altitude fireworks will take place from 9:30 PM to 11:00 PM in two phases, about 25 minutes in total with each phase lasting around 12 minutes.

On the day of the event, the “Traditional Welcoming Ceremony” begins at 10:00 AM at Dongmen City Gate, followed by the “Street Parade Carnival” at 10:30 AM, marching from Dongmen to the Yenping Prince Shrine for a worship ceremony and performance ensemble. Limited-edition protective amulets will be given out after the parade. Additionally, at 9:00 AM on the day of the fireworks event at the temple’s Buddha Hall, the Taijiang National Park Administration will distribute free genuine leather Spring Ox keychains (while supplies last, 700 available) in exchange for completed questionnaires.

The international high-altitude fireworks display at Tainan’s Luermen is always dazzling and attracts numerous photography enthusiasts who stake out spots around the temple area early, sparking discussions and trends. Traffic control often begins around 4–5 PM depending on the crowd. With its rich expression of Taiwanese folk traditions, this event—now over 30 years old—boasts even deeper cultural significance.
