The world’s leading travel search company Skyscanner (www.tianxun.cn) recently conducted a survey on the travel dreams of Chinese consumers. The findings revealed that regardless of age, an average of 72% of people have travel-related dreams, though the meaning of travel varies across different age groups. Among those aged 18–34, 76% of young people are primarily motivated to travel by their dreams, with younger travelers increasingly seeking cultural experiences, cuisine, and personal hobbies.
The research found that people aged 18–24 are increasingly interested in experiencing different cultures and cuisines while traveling; those aged 25–34 tend to associate travel dreams with cultural experiences and sightseeing; and among those over 35, 57% consider sightseeing as the main purpose of travel. Skyscanner’s survey shows that although different age groups have their own travel dreams, younger people are more inclined to travel for experiences and personal interests.
When asked, “Many people achieve their dreams through travel. Do you also have a dream you want to fulfill through travel?”, 72% of respondents answered affirmatively. Among those aged 18–24, 45% are more willing to pursue their dreams through travel, and 32% of those aged 25–34 share the same aspiration. This shows that young people are more eager to explore and experience the world to realize their dreams. With China’s outbound tourist numbers expected to reach 112 to 115 million, more and more Chinese dreams will be fulfilled on the road.
When it came to dream destinations, Australia, France, the United States, New Zealand, and Japan were the top five most popular. Australia, with its Great Barrier Reef and Gold Coast, has long been a desirable destination; France, known as the City of Romance, remains a top choice for Chinese travelers; and the United States and New Zealand have gained popularity in China through continuous promotion, especially with the hit show “Where Are We Going, Dad?” boosting New Zealand’s appeal.
To encourage more young people to embark on their dream journeys, Skyscanner launched an online interactive campaign called “Dream Skyscanners,” aimed at supporting young people who bravely pursue their dreams through travel. To this end, Skyscanner held a launch event for “Dream Skyscanners” on January 27, 2015. The event was attended by numerous guests and media representatives, with Dream Skyscanner representatives from various fields sharing their stories of pursuing dreams and traveling.

For this campaign, Skyscanner discovered many “Dream Skyscanners” around us and shared their travel and dream-chasing stories with young Chinese. One Dream Skyscanner at the event said, “I have successfully opened my own unique coffee shop, but my simplest original dream was to taste different kinds of coffee from around the world and learn the most authentic coffee-making processes.” His travel footprint spans the globe, and he often flies to different places just to try a unique cup of coffee. What he seeks on his journeys is not the scenery, but the local culture and the history of coffee.

The renowned musician “Roy” also attended the Dream Skyscanners launch event. She said, “Music takes every soul out of its body. My dream is to collect music from all over the world and inspire more musical creativity.” Her travel footprint spans the globe, and her dreams have also been realized along the way. Several other Dream Skyscanners present shared that their dreams began with travel and were realized through it, with some noting that Skyscanner had accompanied them throughout their journeys.

The initiator of the Dream Skyscanners campaign stated: “Skyscanner has always carried the mission of helping young people chase their dreams, as its very creation stemmed from a travel story. Skyscanner’s founder, Gareth Williams, is a dreamer passionate about skiing and travel. In order to find the best flight deals, he had to search various airline and travel agency websites, a tedious process that consumed a great deal of his time and energy. The idea for Skyscanner was inspired by his continuous travels.”
