Recently, the "Extraordinary Journey – Mystery Expedition" to explore the Lop Nur no-man’s land, organized by the international high-end outdoor brand Discovery Expedition, has been successfully completed. Fourteen seasoned self-driving and off-road enthusiasts, passionate about adventure, spent five days and four nights covering a distance of 1,123 kilometers, successfully driving out of this no-man’s land known as the "Sea of Death." Discovery Expedition also left the tracks of its exploration and footprints on the vast and mysterious land of Lop Nur.
Discovery Expedition’s spirit of exploration engraved in Lop Nur
The Lop Nur expedition by Discovery Expedition started in Hami, passing through the Daha Valley, the site where Peng Jiamu went missing, Lop Nur Town, Haitou Ancient City, Loulan Ancient City, the Sun Tomb, the Xiaohe Cemetery, and Algan (34th Regiment), before finally arriving in Korla. Participants not only witnessed the vast scenery of "lonely smoke in the desert and the setting sun over the long river," as well as the magical landscape of the Yardang landforms, but also experienced up close the mysterious cultural aura emanating from the ruins of Loulan Ancient City, Haitou Ancient City, the Xiaohe Cemetery, and the Sun Tomb amid broken walls, withered branches, and yellow sands. They were also awed by the remarkable survival ability of the populus euphratica trees.
"With thousands of years of historical and cultural accumulation and dramatic changes in the landscape, crossing Lop Nur is different from any other journey. Coming here again and imagining the past prosperity through today’s desolation and barrenness made the experience even more shocking. Crossing Lop Nur is truly an undisputed journey of exploration and an extraordinary adventure," said A’Hao, the expedition leader and a seasoned off-road enthusiast.
Discovery Expedition originates from the U.S. Discovery Channel and is dedicated to joining outdoor self-driving and adventure enthusiasts in undertaking extraordinary journeys, experiencing the wonders of nature, mysterious cultures, and resilient life forces. This exploration of Lop Nur is undoubtedly an excellent embodiment of its brand philosophy.
Discovery Expedition gear withstands the harsh environment of Lop Nur
Covering nearly 100,000 square kilometers, Lop Nur mainly consists of deserts, Gobi deserts, and saline-alkali crust lands. The bumpy ride throughout the journey was truly grueling for the team members, and all six SUVs inevitably got stuck in the sand. In addition, DX Extraordinary Club entered Lop Nur in late winter to early spring, when the minimum nighttime temperature dropped to minus 20°C. The drastic day-night temperature difference and howling winds also gave the team members a unique camping experience.
To cope with the harsh environment of Lop Nur, Discovery Expedition provided all team members with windproof and cold-resistant jackets identical to those worn by its brand ambassador Bear Grylls, perfectly meeting the clothing requirements for windproofing and cold resistance on this trip. This product also recently won the "Outstanding International Equipment Award" at the 2014 China Outdoor Industry Annual Awards.
Additionally, Discovery Expedition supplied team members with essential gear for desert activities and camping, including outdoor hiking shoes, fleece hats, insulated water bottles, backpacks, air mattresses, tents, and sleeping bags, helping ensure the successful completion of the Lop Nur crossing.
Discovery Expedition’s 2015 extraordinary journey officially begins
In September last year, Discovery Expedition’s brand ambassador Bear came to China and announced the "Extraordinary Journey – Mystery Expedition" self-driving routes through China’s four major no-man’s lands during his visit. Successfully crossing Lop Nur marked the first victory of this series of events.
Currently, the plan for the second leg of the extraordinary journey – crossing Hoh Xil and Qiangtang – has been finalized. The Discovery Expedition extraordinary self-driving club fleet is about to set off, following the footsteps of Tibetan antelopes across Hoh Xil, engaging in soulful dialogue with oneself in the vast and lonely icy wilderness, exploring the miracles of life in the "forbidden zone of life," and embarking on an extraordinary journey with Discovery Expedition to experience another marvelous chapter of life.
