Down has always been Marmot’s most important insulation product. No synthetic can surpass down in terms of lightweight feel, packability, and longevity.
Down is Marmot’s DNA
Down consists of the fluffy, soft undercoating found on waterfowl feathers—a multidimensional structure that traps body heat to provide warmth. Highly breathable and extremely comfortable, high-quality down offers the most effective natural insulation by weight. Originally, geese were raised mainly for meat, and down emerged as a byproduct of the food industry. The geese are free-range on farms of varying sizes—their natural living environment—not confined indoors. They are grain-fed. Currently, Marmot sources most of its down from Russia, Poland, and China.
Durability
High loft means superior warmth, a lightweight feel, and enhanced durability. Our premium down is engineered to last longer than synthetic insulation. With proper care, the gray goose down used by Marmot can last over 25 years, and often does for 20 years or more. Marmot down products are designed for both comfort and long-term use.
Breathability
Down has exceptional moisture absorption capabilities—water vapor passes through it easily, helping sleepers stay comfortable without the clamminess often associated with synthetics. With enhanced breathability, you’ll feel more comfortable whether wearing a down jacket during activity or sleeping in a sleeping bag. The high cleanliness of the down is ensured through special cleaning and drying processes using carefully developed machinery, along with specialized sanitization treatments to guarantee low allergenicity. Once cleaned, the final product meets a very high standard of cleanliness.
