Hakkas' Tulou madness in Zhutian Town - A super fun day trip to this small town!

Zhutian enjoys a prime geographical location, abundant natural resources, and due to its early development, it boasts a strong historical charm. Take your family on a trip to Zhutian this weekend!

The Tiaodi Dadahang was established because Tiaodi Village (Tiao ㄊㄧㄠ, selling rice; Di ㄉㄧˊ, buying rice) was historically the rice granary of southern Taiwan and also the distribution hub for trading grains and cereals in the Liutui Hakka region. Utilizing the waterway of Longjing Stream to connect Donggang River and then to Donggang for transshipment onto larger ships bound for Tangshan on the mainland, a river port was thus set up in Tiaodi Village, known as "Dadahang." The old site is now a sluice gate.

Standing by the stream is a quaint red-brick "Respect-for-Words Pavilion," a furnace dedicated to burning used paper with writing on it, reflecting the Hakka people's spirit of "farming in fine weather, reading in the rain" and deep reverence for Confucianism and sages.

The Liutui Loyalty Shrine in Zhutian commemorates the martyrs who sacrificed their lives to defend their hometowns and families among the Liutui Hakka ancestors, and it serves as a spiritual bastion for the Liutui Hakka people. The ancestral shrine of the Zhang Wansan family, with its numerous descendants and thriving lineage, and whose later generations have achieved remarkable success, features a quadrangle courtyard-style building with a three-creek roof ridge. It has an inner courtyard with corridors, a fetal terrace at the back, and an imposing and solemn ancestral shrine altar. It is a typical Hakka ancestral shrine and family temple, with many cultural customs and feng shui concepts of the Hakka people embedded within, making it worthy of close appreciation.

The Hakka Cultural Museum building is modeled after the distinctive “Tulou enclosed roundhouse” of the ancestral Hakka homeland. It is a museum that displays, inherits, and preserves the cultural artifacts of the Liutui Hakka people.
