Yuguang Island is known by netizens as the most beautiful beach in Taiwan due to its stunning sunset views. The beach features numerous land art installations for travelers to take photos at, but the most famous one — the Sunset Tower — has indeed been torn down!

In June this year, the Sunset Tower was the site of an accident where a student taking shelter from the rain on the beach was killed when bamboo scaffolding collapsed. After further coordination, the artist and the authorities decided to demolish it. From now on, people will no longer be able to enjoy the beautiful sunset alongside the iconic Sunset Tower, leaving many travelers expressing deep regret.

In recent years, with the rise of the internet and the popularity of installation art, Yuguang Island — nicknamed the Crescent Bay — has transformed into an open-air exhibition space. The most well-known installation, the Sunset Tower, was built by British artist Hugo using discarded oyster racks from the beach. Standing 40 meters tall, it complemented the scenic beauty of Crescent Bay’s shoreline.

With breathtaking sunsets and magnificent installation art, Yuguang Island attracts not only numerous internet celebrities, influencers, and photography enthusiasts but also an increasing number of surfers. Many have praised it as “Tainan’s version of Kenting.” Every summer, it becomes one of the hottest tourist destinations in Taiwan.

In recent years, the number of visitors to Yuguang Island has gradually increased. However, due to inadequate infrastructure on the beach, many people have built their own bamboo shelters, raising safety concerns and leading to a yearly increase in waste. The Tainan City Government has stated that it will hold coordination meetings to discuss the timeline for dealing with other towers and bamboo structures on the island. Travelers visiting Yuguang Island should also pay attention to their own safety.
