Typhoon Lekima intensifies to severe typhoon; land warning issued, northern and northeastern regions urged to brace for strong winds and heavy rain

Typhoon Lekima, the ninth of the season, intensified into a severe typhoon early on the morning of the 8th. The Central Weather Bureau issued a land typhoon warning at 8:30 AM. Residents in northern, northeastern, and eastern Taiwan are advised to take precautions against strong winds and heavy rainfall.

According to data from the Central Weather Bureau, Typhoon Lekima has strengthened into a severe typhoon, with maximum sustained winds near the center reaching 51 meters per second, equivalent to a force 16 wind, and gusts up to 63 meters per second, equivalent to a force 17 wind. The radius of the 7-level storm winds is 250 kilometers, and the 10-level gale radius reaches 80 kilometers.

At present, Typhoon Lekima is positioned 500 kilometers southeast of Taipei over the sea and is moving north-northwest at a speed of 15 kilometers per hour. Its storm circle is gradually approaching the eastern offshore areas of Taiwan, posing threats to Keelung, Taipei and New Taipei, Yilan, and Hualien.

With the issuance of the land warning, Keelung, Taipei and New Taipei, Yilan, and Hualien should remain on high alert and guard against strong winds and heavy rain. For the sea warning, vessels operating in the northern and eastern offshore waters of Taiwan should exercise extreme caution.
 
Currently, long waves have occurred along coastal areas across Taiwan. The public is advised to avoid going to the seaside, pay attention to personal safety when going out, carry rain gear, and as winds and rains are expected to gradually intensify in the afternoon of the 8th, please make preparations for typhoon defense.
