Travelers planning a trip to Hokkaido this autumn should take note！ Due to the steady increase in inbound travelers and the need for airport expansion, Japan’s New Chitose Airport in Hokkaido recently announced plans to raise airport taxes starting October this year.

The airport tax hike at New Chitose Airport in Hokkaido will be implemented in two phases. The first phase runs from October 1 to October 26, raising the original airport tax of 1,030 yen to 1,040 yen. From October 27, the second phase will see the tax increased to 2,610 yen, which is about 450 New Taiwan dollars more than under the previous system.

Many travelers plan to visit Hokkaido in autumn to enjoy the flowers. In addition to selling a wide range of must-buy souvenirs for travelers, New Chitose Airport also offers a variety of specialty dining options. Since opening its international terminal in 2010, passenger numbers have increased 4.5 times over nine years, and the airport has stated that it can no longer cope and must carry out expansion work.

The additional revenue from the raised airport taxes will be used for airport expansion plans. The project aims to double the size of the international terminal and reorganize the bus stations, among other improvements. These fees will be included in the ticket purchase cost in the future, aiming to provide travelers with a more comfortable airport space.
