Typhoon Bailu barrels toward Taiwan straight as a nail-biter — marine warning could be issued as early as tomorrow

The 11th typhoon of the year, Bailu, has formed and is currently located 1,000 kilometers east of Manila. The forecasted path may see it head directly for Taiwan as a "straight-through" or "heart-piercing" typhoon, with the Central Weather Bureau expecting to issue a maritime typhoon warning as early as tomorrow.

Typhoon Bailu is currently moving northwest at a speed of 15 kilometers per hour, with maximum sustained winds near the center of 18 meters per second and gusts reaching up to 25 meters per second. The radius of the typhoon-force winds is about 100 kilometers.

The Central Weather Bureau stated that Typhoon Bailu may make landfall in Hualien and Taitung, but if the Pacific High strengthens, the path may shift further south. A maritime typhoon warning is expected to be issued tomorrow. However, as the storm’s intensity gradually increases, its movement speed will also accelerate, and a land typhoon warning will likely follow after the maritime warning.

The Pacific High is gradually extending westward and strengthening, with slightly reduced moisture. Most areas will be cloudy to sunny, though southern and southeastern regions may still experience localized brief showers or thunderstorms. In the afternoon, there is a chance of localized brief thunderstorms in central and northern Taiwan as well as mountainous areas in Yilan and Hualien, with the possibility of heavy rain in some spots — carry rain gear when going out. Temperatures are rising, with daytime highs around 33°C across the island, and temperatures in the Greater Taipei area reaching up to 34°C, making it rather stuffy.
