That spring, the weather was clear in Iceland – Part 2

After leaving the world-renowned Golden Circle, my travel companions and I drove back onto the Ring Road to continue our whimsical adventure across Iceland. The scenery outside the window kept changing — sometimes a single turn would transform a vast expanse of wilderness into jagged peaks, and once again I couldn’t help but marvel that even driving in Iceland feels like a luxurious treat.

Known as one of Iceland’s seven major waterfalls, Seljalandsfoss is a vertical cascade with a 60-meter drop. From a distance, you can already hear the thunderous roar of the water. There’s a path inside the waterfall that lets you walk around it. Thinking we were well-prepared with waterproof shoes and clothes, we dove in — but we still underestimated nature’s power. We all got completely soaked, but we were still happy because it was such a unique experience.

Years of erosion by the waterfall have created a wide-open plain. We hung out there for quite a while. The sunlight turned the whole wilderness golden, and we also visited a very secluded waterfall nearby. Braving the waterproof shoes, we waded right in. Though the waterfall wasn’t huge, the confined space and steep drop made it quite spectacular. Highly recommended.

Since we were in Iceland, how could we not try Icelandic ice? As it wasn’t yet summer, the spring weather in Iceland could still be tricky at times, so icicles clinging to the rocks were still a common sight. They varied in size but were all crystal clear and glistening. So we found an icicle of a suitable size and ate it like a popsicle. Whether it was just psychological or really true, it tasted incredibly sweet. Truly, nothing beats nature’s own treats.

Skógafoss, often hailed by travelers as Iceland’s most beautiful waterfall, is one of the country’s largest and most magnificent waterfalls, as well as a must-visit photo spot. The abundant water creates a lot of mist, which forms a dreamy rainbow bridge in the sunlight. The beauty of the moment is truly beyond words. To get a great shot, we even waded into the middle of the river. There were simply too many people — if you don’t come early to snag a good spot, you’ll need some clever tactics.
