The Central Weather Bureau continues to issue maritime and land typhoon warnings for Typhoon Mitag (MITAG), No. 18. Mitag has now intensified to a medium-strength typhoon, with its path potentially shifting further westward (closer to Taiwan’s landmass). The seven-level storm circle remains at 180 kilometers in radius, and there is no exclusion of the possibility that Mitag may make landfall in Taiwan.

*Note: Hsinchu City announced at 10:50 a.m. that work and classes will be suspended after 6:00 p.m., but Hsinchu County and City have differing policies, causing considerable public dissatisfaction.

The center of Mitag is located on the sea surface to the south-southeast of Yilan, moving north-northwest. Its storm circle has entered the Bashi Channel and the southeastern offshore waters of Taiwan, posing threats to Nantou, central and northern Taichung, Yilan, Hualien, Taitung, and Matsu. Typhoon Mitag is expected to further intensify in strength.

Except for the southwestern region which is less affected, areas north of mountainous regions in Taichung and Nantou, as well as northern parts of northeastern Taiwan, are under alert. Sea waves have significantly increased; avoid going to the seaside.

Strong winds of force nine or above are expected to hit Yilan and Keelung starting in the afternoon, while wind strength in western regions will noticeably increase after evening.

Typhoon Mitag will also bring rainfall across various regions. Except for Tainan, Chiayi, Kaohsiung, and Pingtung, which are less affected, other areas all face the possibility of heavy rain and torrential rain. The wind and rain will continue until the early hours of Tuesday, and the path and duration of impact require close attention.
