Jeep Outdoor “Time Travelers” Return to Qiangtang: All Things Are Alive and Beautiful

This is a vast expanse of 600,000 square kilometers, where hundreds of kilometers around are desolate and uninhabited, often referred to as the “last pure land on earth.” The region features high-altitude terrain, with an average elevation of over 4,500 meters, earning it the title “the Roof of the Roof of the World.” Here, there are countless sacred mountains and holy lakes, mighty rivers flowing in all directions, vast grasslands, glaciers, hot springs, and geothermal areas, as well as freely roaming Tibetan antelopes, yaks, and wild asses... This wild land, blessed by nature, captivates off-roaders with its vastness, grandeur, freedom, and magic, drawing them back time and again. The Secret Tibet: Return to Qiangtang activity wrote one of the most special chapters in our life journeys.

 A Long-Awaited Return Journey

Some journeys may only happen once in a lifetime, and we were lucky enough to experience it twice. In April 2018, Jeep Outdoor Time Travelers, in collaboration with the Beijing Wrangler Off-Road Club, held their first off-road expedition into Tibet. The same April, the allure of Tibet lingered in our hearts. Returning to the Qiangtang no-man’s-land, revisiting that month filled with off-road passion, and experiencing the Sichuan-Tibet Highway, Xinjiang-Tibet Highway, Qinghai-Tibet Highway, as well as Motuo, Mount Kailash, Lake Manasarovar, and Puruogangri... From gathering in Beijing on April 6 and setting off toward the dream destination, traversing most of China from east to west, to departing from Lhasa into the Qiangtang no-man’s-land on April 19, and finally exiting Qiangtang via Xinjiang and returning to Beijing on May 11, this 36-day extreme off-road adventure showcased the beauty of mountains and rivers, as well as diverse cultural experiences. And yet, Qiangtang remained the most captivating. Its beauty remained vivid in our memories. When speeding along Qiangtang’s rugged gravel roads, amid endless yellow sand and widespread ice and snow, in a world devoid of anyone else but the howling wind—our bodies endured the trials of altitude sickness and cold, while our eyes feasted on towering, continuous snow-capped peaks, scattered pristine lakes, ancient volcanic ruins, and joyfully leaping wildlife... Facing the boundless wilderness, the soul feels open and free, like the pure, flawless blue of the plateau.

Turning Passion into Reality with Strength

Countless conflicts and dramatic changes whisper to the pioneers, “You cannot withstand the storm.” The pioneers quietly reply, “I am the storm!” The only constant in the world is change itself, and stepping out of one’s comfort zone often requires great courage. Faced with the routine of a 9-to-5 city life, Jeepers choose to step into the outdoors. Souls driven by exploration and freedom cannot be confined to cramped office cubicles—they grow stronger through the baptism of wind, rain, and sky. In the Qiangtang no-man’s-land, with temperatures averaging below 0°C, oxygen levels at just 40% of those on the plains, high-altitude sickness above 5,000 meters, biting dry winds, cloudless sun exposure, sudden snow or rain, and ever-changing weather that makes every journey unpredictable—we still pressed forward bravely. Jeep Outdoor jackets, covered in mud and water, bore witness to our days and nights of joy and hardship in Qiangtang, accompanying Jeepers through cold and heat, sunshine and storms. Delivering outstanding performance in extreme conditions is Jeep Outdoor’s unwavering pursuit, and turning off-road passion into reality with strength is the perfect embodiment of the Jeep spirit.

All Things Are Alive and Beautiful

Some say Qiangtang is so beautiful that not visiting it in your lifetime would be a lifelong regret. Through the Return to Qiangtang activity, we increasingly came to understand the insignificance and greatness of life, the boundlessness and limitations of freedom. All things are alive and beautiful—the closer you get, the more you revere; the farther you are, the more you yearn. The call of Qiangtang is etched deep into our bones and blood. This no-man’s-land is full of the unknown and challenges, surprises and dangers at every step. Filled with reverence for life and brave resistance against a mundane existence, dialoguing with nature and rediscovering the world and oneself is the most beautiful meaning of the Qiangtang activity.
