Located in the southwestern part of Texas, the Big Bend area boasts picturesque and poetic landscapes that attract many nature-loving visitors. The region is home to Big Bend Ranch State Park, the largest protected area of the Chihuahuan Desert in the United States, as well as Big Bend National Park, which celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2019. This hidden gem includes three massive canyons along the Rio Grande, which borders Mexico, and the entire Chisos Mountain range. Big Bend National Park is also one of the most biologically diverse national parks in the U.S., featuring a wide variety of wildlife such as birds, plants, cacti, butterflies, bats, and reptiles.

Situated in western Texas, the Big Bend region gets its name from the Rio Grande, the river that forms the border between the U.S. and Mexico. It features vast deserts, dense mountain ranges, numerous squirrels, and cottonwood trees. From the mountaintops, you can enjoy the blue sky and star-studded night views, making it one of the top scenic spots in North America. Far from the hustle and bustle of the city, the Big Bend region is one of the last frontiers in the world and a relatively untouched sanctuary in the U.S. Here, you can rediscover the joys of tranquility, freedom, and simplicity. At Big Bend National Park, enjoy the scenery from multiple perspectives — go rafting or canoeing on the Rio Grande, hike over 300 kilometers of wilderness trails, watch the sunset on horseback, or take a jeep tour along the park’s expansive roads.

Climb to the heart of the Chisos Mountains, and at the 1,524-meter-high destination, you’ll find Green Gulch. This basin is surrounded by mountains over 2,286 meters high and is dotted with 62 campsites, as well as a ranger station, visitor center, and convenience store. The Chisos Mountains Lodge, once awarded Texas’ “Best Scenic Restaurant,” offers comfortable lodging and dining experiences. As the sun sets through a jagged opening in the mountains known as the “Window,” the view from the restaurant is breathtaking. The high elevation of the basin and its shadow paths create an oasis-like environment, offering a refreshing feel even in the peak of summer.
The geological diversity of the Big Bend region is another highlight not to be missed. The Chihuahuan Desert is the cactus capital of North America, with over 1,200 plant species. Here, you can also see the artistic traces left by Native Americans on massive rocks or witness the surreal landscape of Balanced Rock in the Grapevine Hills. The Rio Grande flows through the Big Bend region, offering spectacular scenery along its 442-kilometer stretch of wilderness waterways that cut through five canyons, each marked by steep vertical cliffs. Venturing into the towering canyons, you’ll hear mysterious natural sounds reminiscent of a lively party, as if entering a grand cathedral.

In addition, visitors can also explore by horseback or bicycle. Big Bend Stables offers a variety of horseback riding adventures, from one-hour mountain rides to five-day excursions into Mexico. Big Bend Ranch State Park and the Lajitas Resort offer around 96 kilometers of mountain biking trails open to the public.
