The X-Mudder Mud Run Ignites Tianfu Chengdu: Over 5,000 Mud Warriors Share the Spectacle
On June 22, 2019 X-Mudder Mud Run (hereinafter referred to as “X-Mudder”) officially kicked off in Taixing Town, Xindu District, Chengdu. As China’s only original outdoor obstacle race with a military-inspired concept, X-Mudder has been held in Chengdu for two consecutive years. The event was jointly organized by Beijing Stick Game Sports and Chengdu Biaodian Sports, attracting over 5,000 fitness enthusiasts, sports lovers, professionals, and international friends from Chengdu and nearby regions to form teams and compete.
Like last year, the Chengdu stop featured a Classic Race, but this year the organizing committee redesigned the course based on the terrain, extending the 5-kilometer track to 8 kilometers and increasing the number of obstacles from 12 to 15. “After last year’s event, many participants told the organizing committee that 5 kilometers wasn’t enough. This year, to meet their expectations and deliver a higher-quality race experience, we’ve completely upgraded the course and obstacles. We hope every participant can fully enjoy the competition!” said Ms. Li, the race director of X-Mudder, in an interview with reporters.
In terms of obstacle design, popular favorites among X-Mudder fans such as “Shake It, Warrior,” “Arctic Rebirth,” “Golan Heights,” and “Breakthrough at Cassino” all reappeared on the Chengdu course. Meanwhile, new and upgraded obstacles like “Horizontal Ladder 3.0,” “Verdun Meat Grinder 2.0,” and “Underwater Assault 2.0” not only increased the difficulty but also added more fun to the race. “Underwater Assault 2.0 was really tough!” said Mr. Xu from Chongqing. “The inflatable mats on the water move when you push hard, so it’s almost impossible to complete alone—it’s a real test of teamwork!”
To enhance participant engagement and interaction, as well as to build brand recognition and a sense of belonging among racers, X-Mudder introduced a “Race Points” system and upgraded the individual progression system—the “Honor System.”
Race Points are earned by participating in and completing an X-Mudder Mud Run. A racer’s single-event points = 100 (base points) * obstacle coefficient * distance coefficient * time coefficient. According to the organizing committee, the Race Points system was established because X-Mudder events are held in different cities throughout the year, and due to varying venue and environmental factors, the course length and number of obstacles differ from one location to another. The points system allows for fair comparison across different levels and locations. Points can be accumulated to generate both single-event leaderboards and overall season rankings. The top 100 male and female finishers in each single event will receive direct entry to the finals without having to enter a lottery, and they’ll share a prize pool of one million yuan composed of a base prize from the organizers and part of the registration fees.
The “Honor System” of X-Mudder is built upon the race’s military-inspired roots. It aims to help participants earn and accumulate “merit points” to climb through ranks, enhancing each racer’s sense of pride and belonging. The system encourages participants to continually push their limits and grow together with the event. Based on accumulated merit points, the Honor System is divided into four tiers: “Warrior,” “Non-commissioned Officer,” “Lieutenant,” and “Captain.” These levels are progressive, and participants can advance their rank by earning merit points, unlocking corresponding privileges, special honor badges, and exclusive rewards.
