From June 20 to 21, the 2019 Asia-Pacific Sports Industry Summit was held concurrently with the Asia-Pacific Outdoor Exhibition. The summit explored four key sectors — winter sports, sports industry, outdoor activities, and running — bringing together industry thought leaders to discuss a wide range of topics including “Opportunities from the Winter Olympics and the Southern China Ice and Snow Market,” “Specialty Sports Towns,” “Youth Sports Training,” “The New Blue Ocean of Functional Fashion,” “Corporate Environmental Responsibility,” “Development of Extreme Sports,” “Challenges and Opportunities in the Outdoor Market,” “How High-Quality Materials Drive Outdoor Brands,” “Precision Weather Applications,” “Event IP and Brand Sponsorship Promotion,” and “Empowering and Upgrading Running Groups.” The summit attracted numerous representatives from outdoor brands, distributors, retailers, and professional audiences. During the event, live streaming via platforms such as Like Live brought the summit to over 3,000 online viewers, creating a powerful synergy between online and offline engagement.

This year, the flagship products of various brands prominently reflected several major trends in the development of outdoor gear: lightweight design, youth appeal, fashion orientation, and eco-themed innovation.

Lightweight product design — “Reducing the burden on consumers to enhance their sports experience” has been a key focus for major brands. Products like ultra-thin windbreakers, gas stoves no larger than an egg, trekking poles lighter than an iPhone X, ultralight tents weighing just 1.475kg, carbon fiber umbrellas at approximately 175g, and foldable one-square-meter fitness walls... these lightweight innovations offer consumers comfort and ease through technological advancement.

Trendy product design — The “IN ! OUTDOOR Trendy Functional Launch Area” at the 2019 Asia-Pacific Outdoor Exhibition used display walls to convey ideas on outdoor aesthetic pairings, showcasing the stylish fusion of trend elements with functional outdoor features. This approach integrates functional outdoor gear into everyday fashion for young people. On-site, items ranged from street-style waterproof bags to denim climbing apparel infused with Chinese cultural elements. Whether it was NORTHLAND’s functional series or MobiGarden’s sporty footwear and apparel, the trend of functional urban outdoor style is capturing the attention of younger demographics. As Zhong Chengzhan, General Manager of KAILAS, mentioned during the summit: “Currently, fashion and sports brands are encroaching on the outdoor market. We can look to Japan’s outdoor goods market — where fashion-forward and everyday usability are inevitable trends for outdoor products.”

“Environmental sustainability” remains a key focus for outdoor brands, and the Asia-Pacific Exhibition actively promotes eco-conscious initiatives. Products such as PrimaLoft® bio — insulation materials and fabrics made from 100% recycled and fully biodegradable materials — and retro lamps like “Xun Guang,” created by repurposing discarded outdoor gas canisters, have won the 2019 Asia-Pacific Outdoor Innovation Awards. These eco-innovations received high praise from both audiences and media at the exhibition.

During the exhibition, the organizers of the Asia-Pacific Outdoor Exhibition, Nanjing Ningfei Company, signed strategic cooperation agreements with the COA Outdoor Brand Alliance, the trend-setting ski community builder BOOMSKI, and Huahong Sports Industry. These partnerships aim to support further development in the outdoor, skiing, and fishing industries through mutual collaboration and joint efforts.

On one front, the Travel Life Zone integrated resources from outdoor activities, tourism, RV self-driving, and camping destinations. It created realistic RV and tent camping scenes at the exhibition, incorporating social and entertainment functions such as restaurants, bars, and gatherings. The zone also invited outdoor survival expert Zhu Weiqiang to showcase a fashionable way of enjoying the outdoors.
