The Yilan County Fire Department received a report that a group of 11 people from the Sanyi Sports Association in New Taipei City had set off from Taipei on the 12th to climb Baborukulu Mountain in Datong Township. However, during the return trip, a male leader surnamed Liu, around 60 years old, who had gone ahead to scout the path, failed to return. Fellow hikers reported the incident, prompting the fire department to dispatch personnel and vehicles for a rescue operation. The man’s body was found this morning (the 13th) and he was confirmed dead.
The fire department stated that the Sanyi Sports Association had departed from Taipei at 6 a.m. on the 12th to climb Baborukulu Mountain in Datong Township. The group entered through the second hiking trailhead, planning to complete the hike within a day and return via the first trailhead. However, while passing through a cliff area during the return journey, the male leader surnamed Liu went ahead to scout the path but did not return. Fellow hikers suspected he may have slipped down the slope and subsequently called for fire department assistance.
The fire department dispatched personnel and vehicles from the Datong Fire Station to the scene. Due to the remote location, rescuers arrived at the trailhead around 10 p.m. on the 12th. This morning at around 10 a.m., they used ropes to carry Mr. Liu’s body onto the forest road, but he was already deceased.
