The first weekend of 2020 had nice weather, with clear skies across the country. The following weekend coincides with the presidential election, and many people are planning to return home to vote and possibly make a side trip. Here’s an overview of the weekly weather.

On Tuesday, January 7, most areas in Taiwan, including Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu, will be mostly cloudy to sunny. There will be large day-night temperature differences in the western half of the country, with only scattered brief showers in the eastern and southeastern regions. Matsu, Kinmen, and the western half of the country may experience localized fog or low clouds affecting visibility—please stay alert.
On Wednesday, January 8, the northeast monsoon will strengthen, and on Thursday, January 9, the northeast monsoon or a continental cold air mass will affect the region. These two days will bring colder weather to the northern and northeastern parts of the country, with other regions also experiencing cooler mornings and evenings. Regarding temperatures, the period from late Wednesday night to early Thursday morning will be the peak of this cold air wave. Due to the cold air combined with radiative cooling effects, temperatures in central and northern Taiwan as well as the northeastern region could drop to around 14°C in the early morning, with coastal and mountainous areas possibly seeing lows below 12°C. Southern Taiwan and Hualien-Taitung will have lows between 16–18°C. Everyone is advised to take warming measures to avoid catching a chill.
In terms of weather patterns, the windward eastern half of the country on Wednesday and Thursday will see increased cloud cover and localized brief showers, while other regions will remain mostly cloudy to sunny. The greater Taipei area may also experience scattered brief showers on Wednesday, but overall moisture levels won’t be high.
On Friday and Saturday, January 10 and 11, the northeast monsoon or continental cold air mass will weaken, leading to a slight rebound in temperatures, ranging between 16–22°C across the country. However, mornings will still feel cool, and rainfall will decrease. Most areas will have mostly cloudy to sunny weather, with only small-scale showers remaining in the eastern half.
On Sunday, January 12, the northeast monsoon will strengthen again, and on Monday, the northeast monsoon will continue to affect the region. These two days will bring cooler weather back to the northern and northeastern parts of the country, with other regions also experiencing cooler mornings and evenings. The northern and eastern parts will have brief showers, and due to higher moisture levels, the mountainous areas in central and southern Taiwan may also see localized brief showers. Other regions will have more cloud cover.
