On December 14, 2019, the COLMO Air Conditioners·2019 FIS Ski Big Air World Cup Beijing and the concert concluded successfully at Shougang Park. Champions were crowned in front of an enthusiastic crowd of skiing fans. In the qualification rounds for snowboarding and freestyle skiing held on December 12 and 13, although China had sent young athletes to compete in all events, unfortunately none advanced to the finals. Although we missed seeing the outstanding performances of Chinese athletes, top international athletes from around the world still delivered an exhilarating and thrilling competition.

The finals for freestyle skiing men’s and women’s events kicked off first at 4:30 pm on December 14. Norwegian athlete Johanne Killi claimed the women’s title with a score of 179.00. Born in 1997, she is hailed as a freestyle skiing prodigy in Norway, having won six X-Games medals and frequently standing on the podiums of various FIS World Cup events. She secured the championship with a commanding lead of nearly 24 points over the second-place finisher. The men’s title also went to a Norwegian, Birk Ruud, born in 2000, who won with 190.25 points, edging out the second-place competitor by just 0.25 points.

In the snowboarding finals, the women’s title was claimed by Japanese snowboarding prodigy Miyabi Onitsuka, while defending champion and top contender Anna Gasser from Austria took the silver. Canadian rider Max Parrot won the men’s title with 186.00 points, and Swedish defending champion Sven Thorgren finished second, one point behind.

As the main sponsor of the event, COLMO Air Conditioners also awarded Best Trick prizes for both the women’s snowboard and ski categories, adding extra excitement to the prestigious Boiling Snow competition.

A Decade of Refinement Forges a Top-Tier Event
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Boiling Snow event in China. Originally known as the Boiling Snow Beijing World Snowboard Big Air, this year’s competition expanded from the snowboard big air to include freestyle skiing events, and the venue moved from last year’s National Stadium “Bird’s Nest” to the Shougang Big Air venue.
This is the 10th year that Boiling Snow has been in China. Over these 10 years, Boiling Snow has allowed Chinese skiing enthusiasts to witness world-class big air skiing competitions and observe the skills of top-tier international athletes. The combination of skiing and music has made Boiling Snow an unmissable annual winter sports carnival. This year’s COLMO Air Conditioners·2019 FIS Ski Big Air World Cup Beijing expanded from the snowboard big air to include freestyle skiing, doubling the number of athletes and the duration of the event. It gathered the world’s top athletes in both snowboard and ski big air events, with 146 athletes from 25 countries registering to compete. Boiling Snow athletes pushed the boundaries of extreme tricks to new heights, while the event also featured electrifying band performances, delivering a feast for both the eyes and ears.
Notably, this year’s event was held for the first time at the newly completed Shougang Big Air, which consists of three parts: the course, the judge tower, and the spectator stands. The course is 164 meters long, 34 meters wide at its broadest point, and 60 meters high. This venue will also serve as the official big air competition site for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. It is the only Olympic venue located within the city during the 2022 Games, where four gold medals will be awarded. The design of the Shougang Big Air incorporates elements from the flying apsaras in Dunhuang murals, whose meaning coincides with the English name of the big air event, “Big Air.” This collaboration with Boiling Snow marked the public debut of the Shougang Big Air. The COLMO Air Conditioners 2019 Boiling Snow Beijing Big Air World Cup will be the first major international event hosted at the venue after its completion, and it coincides with the 70th anniversary of the founding of New China and the 100th anniversary of Shougang Park, giving it special historical significance.
