Not just Luce Chapel at Tunghai University anymore—must-visit new university churches in Taichung

Speaking of must-visit spots in Taichung, many people think of Luce Chapel at Tunghai University. But on December 6, a brand-new beautiful chapel, “Our Lady of Providence Chapel,” was completed on the campus of Providence University, attracting many visitors for photos and sightseeing, and becoming a new check-in landmark in Shalu, Taichung.

The Our Lady of Providence Chapel was designed by architect Hong Ching-an. Its exterior design draws inspiration from bamboo and bamboo shoots, resembling a building wrapped in overlapping bamboo husks, with gracefully curved, rounded angles. The hollowness of bamboo symbolizes “humility,” the nodes of bamboo represent “integrity,” and the bamboo husk signifies “spiritual rebirth.”

From a high vantage point, the shape of the chapel is inspired by the image of a “fish,” derived from the biblical story of Jesus performing the “miracle of the five loaves and two fish.” Meanwhile, the path from the main gate of Providence University to the Our Lady of Providence Chapel is a straight line—a straight road leading directly to the chapel, symbolizing the path to eternal happiness, also based on words spoken by Jesus.
