The brightest star in the night sky — Fenix HM65R dual-light source, rugged magnesium alloy headlamp

Introduction
The FENIX HM65R is the latest multi-functional headlamp from the well-known high-end mobile lighting brand Fenix, built for extreme environments. It can be considered an upgraded version of the HL60R, inheriting its predecessor’s high reliability, high brightness, and dual power supply advantages. While being lighter in weight, it also offers increased battery capacity and higher maximum brightness. It also features dual-button dual-light sources (white light and neutral white light), making it easy to operate and user-friendly. Its IP68 protection rating ensures worry-free use even in harsh outdoor settings.

Ever since I started using Fenix headlamps in 2016, I’ve been completely hooked. During the 2016 Vibram HK100 100-kilometer ultramarathon, I had the misfortune of encountering Hong Kong’s coldest weather in 70 years. The reliable performance, outstanding penetration, and excellent low-temperature resistance of the Fenix HL50 headlamp helped me safely complete the race and earn my little golden medal.

During the 2016 and 2017 editions of the Jinhua Mountain Top 100-kilometer Ultramarathon, the Fenix HL50 continued to light the way forward.

In 2017, as I prepared for the “Around Hong Kong Tai Mo Shan 100-Mile Ultramarathon,” I purchased the higher-performance Fenix HL60R. In subsequent events such as the “Around Hong Kong Tai Mo Shan 100-Mile Ultramarathon,” the “Three Gorges 168 Ultramarathon,” and the “Jiangshan 120KM Ultramarathon,” the Fenix HL60R’s long battery life and high brightness truly shined, helping me run through the night safely and finish without worries.

Meanwhile, the Fenix HL50 went on to “influence” the Xiamen heroine Xiaomitang, who has since taken it along on her adventures.

At the recently concluded Lingjiu Mountain 100 Ultramarathon, I got to experience Fenix’s newest offering — the Fenix HM65R dual-light source, rugged magnesium alloy headlamp. The HM65R helped me conquer the darkness and ultimately secured me fourth place.

Unboxing Report
Through the simple and clean PVC transparent plastic packaging box, you can directly see the main body of the headlamp. The front is printed with key performance parameters such as the headlamp model, maximum brightness, and battery type used. The back features details like runtime at various brightness levels, beam distance, protection rating, and drop protection height.

Opening the package reveals the exquisitely crafted headlamp itself. Unscrewing the switch, you’ll find a high-capacity 18650 rechargeable lithium battery (ARB-L18 - 3500 mAH) included, along with the manual, warranty card, and an O-ring seal.

The Fenix HM65R headlamp is made of magnesium alloy. Tested without the battery, it weighs just 100 grams, and with an 18650 rechargeable battery, it weighs only 149 grams — making it even lighter than the previously used HL60R.

The main light of the Fenix HM65R uses a dual-button dual-light source design, offering both spot and flood beam modes, with a maximum brightness of up to 1400 lumens and a maximum beam distance of 163 meters. The top of the main light has two independent buttons for spot and flood modes, making operation simple with direct and quick mode adjustments. It also features a memory function that recalls your last brightness setting upon restart.

The spot beam uses a white LED bulb with a higher rated power and greater light efficiency. Coupled with a specially designed micro-orange peel reflector, it ensures a longer beam distance while providing relatively even light distribution. When the spot beam is turned on, the light spot is even and covers a wide area. At high brightness, it’s as bright as daylight right in front of your eyes, dazzling like the headlights of a car. The spot beam can reach a maximum brightness of 1000 lumens across 4 levels, adjustable in the sequence of medium – high – maximum – low. Some may feel that such high brightness isn’t always necessary. However, higher lumen values mean stronger load capacity and stability, helping avoid dangers caused by headlamp failure in the dark, and also proving extremely useful in emergencies.
