Taiwan is surrounded by sea, and though its land area is not large, it is home to the highest peak in Northeast Asia and boasts 268 peaks over 3,000 meters in elevation – the highest number of any island in the world. Such abundant ridge resources have nurtured Taiwan’s uniquely distinctive ridge culture. The Tourism Bureau of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications has even designated 2020 as the “Ridge Mountains Tourism Year,” launching various promotional materials and calendars. These ultra-stylish merchandise items are definitely must-haves travelers won’t want to miss.

This year’s calendar centers on Taiwan’s ridges, illustrated by Taiwan’s first illustrator featured in The New York Times, Chuan Beimu. He reinterprets the imagery of each mountain through illustration, infusing different cultural codes to create poetic and story-like visuals.

The imagery was co-produced by the Jing’ai Alpine Team, winners of the 2016 German iF Student Design Award. The team cleaned up mountain trails while capturing stunning landscapes, documenting the beauty of Taiwan’s ridges. This makes the 2020 Ridge Mountains Tourism Year calendar a collection of deeply moving, high-quality images.

Beyond showcasing the splendor of Taiwan’s ridges, the calendar also cleverly leaves room for the viewer’s imagination, subtly enticing the spirit of adventure within and inspiring people to explore the mountains firsthand.

In addition to the calendar, there is also a highly popular walking stick notebook. Future activities will be held on the Tourism Bureau’s Facebook fan page, and there will even be a hidden edition, giving everyone a chance to get one for free.
