Toys are a shared childhood experience for many, and even as adults, there’s still a child within our hearts. The North Tobacco Factory in Songshan Cultural and Creative Park will host the “Toys Galore” exhibition from December 28 to March 1. The exhibition is like a giant toy house filled with all kinds of fun and fascinating toys and installations that spark the curiosity of both kids and adults, inviting them to explore and experience together.

“Toys Galore – Maker Training Camp” unveils the inspirational sources behind various toy creations, showcasing the boundless imagination of creators. Through storytelling that extends into education, the exhibition begins with the story of the paper puppet Qiqi. With the company and guidance of the lucky mouse Zhizhi, visitors embark on an adventure, exploring the creative energy behind toy design through Qiqi’s journey—letting both children and adults experience the joy of learning through play.

In addition to unique toys from around the world, the exhibition also features rare and fun items such as music boxes that play tunes when you turn their scrolls, hand-cranked gramophones, bicycle-powered flying fish contraptions, wind-up toys, old-school arcade airplane and marble games from the neighborhood candy stores, light-shadow walls, rainbow tunnels, paper airplane launchers, life-sized dinosaur costumes made from everyday items, and hand-cranked die-cutting machines.

The exhibition is curated by renowned paper art master Hong Shin-fu. Beyond multiple toy-themed displays, each exhibit is thoughtfully designed to help visitors easily understand the logic and mechanics behind various toys and objects. Examples include the “Paper Lantern Sculpture” craft for the Lantern Festival, the creation process of “music boxes,” the transformation of “Grandpa’s Bicycle” into different mechanical toys, the pop-up book “Magic Library,” and the light-shadow tunnel where colors linger to create a surreal “rainbow tunnel.” It feels like stumbling into a magical toy house, full of delightful surprises.

Additionally, Master Hong Shin-fu has invited various makers to share their works and rare toys collected from around the world. The exhibition incorporates the STEAM education approach pioneered in the United States to encourage hands-on making, stimulate creativity, and develop problem-solving skills. To celebrate the Year of the Rat in 2020, visitors will receive a limited-edition lucky rat marble upon entry during the exhibition period, adding a festive touch to the visit.
